Kenny Shim is a multi-nominated Malaysian contemporary dance choreographer based in Kuala Lumpur. His works have been featured in distinguished events, fashion shows, and elite experiences across Malaysia. Known for pioneering collaborations between technology, mathematics, fashion, and classical ballet, his choreography is stylish with a modern edge while delivering highly captivating and theatrical experiences for audiences.

Upon returning to Malaysia, Shim launched his debut production, Triple Bill of Contemporary Dance Works, which featured Winged Wolves and the Bamboo Mew and Pieces of Three Movements. He has also been a commissioned choreographer for the prestigious 15th and 16th BOH Cameronian Arts Awards.

Shim’s work extends beyond traditional stage performances. He has collaborated with luxury brands such as Hermès and Dior, infusing his signature movement style into high-fashion experiences. His interest in film led to partnerships with Chicago-based NEON 35 MEDIA, choreographing a commercial for H&M. Additionally, he served as the movement director for The Edge, a musical written by Nick Choo and directed by Christopher Ling.

His artistic collaborations include notable Malaysian performing arts institutions such as the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPAC), MyDance Alliance, the Young KL Singers (YKLS), the Kuala Lumpur Men’s Choir (KLMC), and KuLT. He has also worked internationally as a commissioned choreographer for Marlupi Dance Academy in Indonesia, expanding his influence beyond Malaysia.

In 2023, Shim choreographed Psychosynthesis, a full-length contemporary dance production reflecting the collective experiences of individuals and communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. The production integrates science, multimedia, and innovative lighting and set designs, creating a powerful and immersive theatrical experience.

A seven-time (and counting) nominee for Best Choreographer, Shim’s contributions to Malaysian dance have been widely recognized. His work Flightworks was nominated for Best Group Performance and Best Choreographer in a Mixed Bill at the 18th BOH Cameronian Arts Awards.

Beyond choreography, Shim is dedicated to nurturing emerging talent. He serves as an advisory board member for Canaan Dance, an international dance competition fostering new talents and industry connections for young dancers worldwide.
